Fireballs 15, Underdogs 13

Tuesday night found the Fireballs in familiar territory, at "HMT #5" for a late-night battle with the Underdogs. We were the home team, so took the field first, with yours truly patrolling left field as usual.

Right out of the gate, we make quick work of the Underdogs, with some fine defensive work from the infield as well as my put-out on a deep fly ball to left. It was a little breezy pre-game, but it died down, so judging that ball was a piece of cake. Plus, it was hit more or less directly at me. I only had to back up about 5 steps.

We jumped out to an early lead, getting four runs in the bottom of the 1st. We gave up a couple in the top of the 2nd, but went right out in the second and dropped six on them. I led off with a nice double to left, and scored two batters later. I got to hit again in the 4th inning, getting a single, then scoring again from second two batters later. Decent evening at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored.

But the Underdogs weren't going quietly. They chipped away at our lead, due in part to some excellent hitting, but also some defensive miscues. They managed to tie the game at 13 in the top of the 7th inning, but we managed to retake the lead in the bottom of the 7th with 2 more runs. Oddly, the ump didn't call the game over until we made the third out of the inning. Usually the game's done when the home team breaks the tie in the bottom of the last inning, but whatever. A win is a win.

And we finally got our first legitimate one.
